Lighting Tools

Plan lumens, wattage, fixture size, placement, and layered lighting.

Project planning guide

Use lighting estimates as a starting point for a layered plan

Lighting calculators can compare lumen targets, fixture counts, and placement patterns, but they do not see wall colours, shades, beam angles, daylight, or the actual photometric data of a fitting. Treat the numeric result as one input into a layered plan rather than a guarantee of brightness.

Separate ambient, task, and accent lighting. Then check the selected fixture data and electrical requirements before installation, especially where moisture, heat, or regulated work is involved.

Before you calculate or buy

  • Define the task and room use before choosing a lumen target.
  • Use the actual lumen output of the chosen lamp or fitting rather than wattage alone.
  • Plan ambient, task, and accent light separately where the room needs all three.
  • Check ceiling height, beam spread, dimming compatibility, and surface reflectance.
  • Have electrical installation and safety requirements checked by a qualified professional where required.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Treating watts as a direct measure of visible light across different lamp technologies.
  • Dividing total lumens evenly without considering task locations or beam pattern.
  • Ignoring dark finishes, shades, diffusers, and high ceilings that affect delivered light.
  • Using a planning estimate as approval for wiring, load, or electrical safety.
