Rug Size Calculator checkpoint
A seating group occupies about 2.75 m × 2.05 m and the design calls for roughly 350 mm of rug showing around the group.
Inputs used
| Furniture group length | 2.75 m |
|---|---|
| Furniture group width | 2.05 m |
| Rug extension each side | 0.35 m |
Calculator result
- Target rug length
- 3.45 m
- Target rug width
- 2.75 m
- Target rug area
- 9.49 m²
Decision from this checkpoint
Compare the target dimensions with available rug sizes, then tape the closest candidates on the floor and check coffee-table and walking clearances.
- Decide which furniture legs should sit on the rug before rounding to a retail size.
- Check doors and hearths against the larger rug footprint.

Draw the room and the fixed circulation routes
Start with the room dimensions, doors, windows, radiators, built-ins, and the paths people use most often. A furniture arrangement should be judged against those routes before proportions are considered. Mark the available seating zone on paper or with removable tape so the maximum footprint is clear.
Place the sofa before sizing the smaller pieces
The sofa normally establishes the main seating edge and viewing direction. Enter its actual width and depth, including projecting arms or chaise sections. Leave the required walking and door-opening space around it. Once the sofa position works, the rug and coffee table can be sized relative to the real seating arrangement rather than to an empty room.
Use the rug to connect the seating group
A rug can sit fully under furniture or connect the front legs of the main seating pieces, depending on the room and rug size. The calculator can help compare options, but check that the chosen size does not create narrow strips or trip-prone edges in busy walkways. Tape the proposed rug outline on the floor to judge scale before ordering.
Keep the coffee table usable and reachable
Compare the table width and depth with the sofa and surrounding chairs, then check the gap between the table and seating. The table should be reachable without forcing people to squeeze through the main route. Rounded or oval tables can sometimes improve movement in compact rooms, but the real footprint still needs to be checked.
Test the full arrangement at floor level
Use masking tape, cardboard, or the outlines of existing furniture to mark every piece at full size. Walk through the room, open doors and drawers, and sit in the main seats. This quick physical test can reveal a circulation problem that a proportion rule alone does not show. Keep the final dimensions with the purchase list.
