What the Tile Quantity Calculator actually calculates

The tool divides surface area by the tile's face area, applies the waste percentage, and rounds up to whole tiles. It does not model joint widths, edge cuts, pattern layout, or tile orientation. Whole-box rounding must be handled separately.

The calculation path

Surface area is divided by one tile’s face area and rounded up after the waste factor.

Inputs that can change the answer

  • Surface area: Enter surface area in m².
  • Tile length: Enter tile length in cm.
  • Tile width: Enter tile width in cm.
  • Waste allowance: Percentage applied at the stage shown in the method; enter 10 for ten percent.

Checks that stay outside the formula

Choose the cutting allowance from the proposed layout and installer guidance; a fixed percentage does not guarantee sufficient tiles.

A practical order for entering the data

  1. Enter the net floor or wall area to tile in square metres.
  2. Enter the tile face length and width in centimetres, not millimetres.
  3. Choose a cutting and breakage percentage, then compare the whole-tile count with supplier box quantities.

Engine check using the prefilled sample

Flooring example: surface area = 20 m², tile length = 60 cm, tile width = 60 cm and waste allowance = 10 %. Replace the sample dimensions and pack information with the measured floor and the exact product format you intend to order.

Worked example and purchase checks

The calculator converts one tile into square metres, divides the target surface by that tile area, rounds up to whole tiles, and then applies the entered waste allowance before the final whole-tile round-up.

Illustrative worked example

Planning 600 × 300 mm tiles for a 23.7 m² floor with a 12% cutting allowance.

How to read the result

Treat the count as an area-based planning quantity. Convert it to whole boxes using the actual box quantity or coverage, and ask the installer to verify layout-sensitive waste.

Assumptions this example makes

  • Tile length and width describe the face size used in the area calculation.
  • The waste percentage is a project assumption chosen by the visitor.

What this calculator does not prove

  • It does not model grout-joint width, tile orientation, pattern repeats, boxed quantities, breakage rates, or a cutting layout.
  • Nominal tile size can differ from actual manufactured size; verify the product data.
Tile face and floor coverageSketch is explanatory, not to scale.

Mistakes that change this result

  1. Entering millimetres as metres or vice versa.
  2. Assuming a percentage waste figure proves a diagonal or patterned layout will work.
  3. Ordering individual tile count when the product is sold only by full boxes.

Tile Quantity Calculator — Ordering questions for this material

Does the count account for grout joints?

Not explicitly. It uses tile face area only; check a dimensioned layout for the actual joint spacing and edge pieces.

Will diagonal laying be calculated automatically?

No. You must choose an allowance appropriate to the pattern and confirm it against a cutting layout.
